Introduction
Short codes are generally 4 to 8 digits numbers. Country to country short code number
length changes and its starting numbers can also be different. As for example, Australian
short codes are six to eight digits and it starts with 19. In United Kingdom short
code services are 6 to 8 digits and it must starts with 7 and 4 but adult related
services then must use codes starting with 69 or 89. In Belgium short codes are
4 digits. In South Africa Codes are five digits in length and short codes will start
with either a "3" or "4". In India it starts with “5 “and it is five digits length.
Short Codes are also known as short numbers. Our normal telephone numbers are longer
but short codes are designed that can easy to read and remember so anybody can easy
recollect from top of the mind.
Short codes are widely used for value-added services such as voting for reality
shows, ordering caller tunes or ring tones, mobile services. Messages sent to short
code can be billed at a higher rate than a standard SMS on long number. Customer
can also subscribe monthly services.
Generally two types of short code services are available, dedicated and shared.
Dedicated short codes are used for one customer and shared are used among several
customers and based on keywords traffics are diverted.
